Cool Tones & Sweet Moments: A Newborn Boy’s Studio Session in Grey, Blue, Teal & Green

This recent session in our Kingston, Ontario photography studio had all the ingredients for a beautiful set of portraits: loving parents, a sweet little bundle, and a palette of greys, blues, teals, and greens that worked perfectly with his soft baby skin and dark hair.

Every newborn session is special, but this one stood out for its relaxed vibe and stylish details. From the cozy textured wraps to the quiet moments between wide eyes and sleepy yawns, this shoot captured it all.

A Soft & Cool Colour Story for a Baby Boy

For this session, we leaned into a soft, nature-inspired colour palette. Grey, blue, teal, and green are subtle, sophisticated, and soothing—perfect for highlighting a newborn’s features while giving the photos a timeless feel. We carefully selected wraps, blankets, and hats in varying shades to add dimension without overpowering the simplicity of the setup.

The soft grey wrap brought out the baby’s delicate features and paired beautifully with a textured blanket for a classic look. Blue and teal tones added richness and variety to the gallery, and a pop of earthy green gave a fresh, natural feel that worked beautifully in contrast to the cooler tones. These colours are especially lovely for baby boys, offering an alternative to the usual bright baby blues.

We used different layers and textures to keep things interesting while staying true to the gentle, neutral theme. Knitted hats, cozy swaddle wraps, and rustic wooden props helped us create a variety of setups—each one warm, soft, and perfectly suited to this sweet little guy.

Tattoos, Tiny Toes & Two States of Baby

One of the standout features of this session was capturing this little one both wide awake and peacefully asleep—which doesn’t always happen in one shoot! He gave us some quiet, alert moments where he was calmly taking in the world, and then eventually drifted off into a deep sleep, letting us gently pose him in a variety of cozy setups.

Awake or asleep, this baby boy was a dream to photograph. His expressions while awake were so curious and calm—it felt like he was trying to figure out the big camera in front of him! Once he dozed off, we were able to transition into those classic curled-up newborn poses, wrapped in soft fabrics and gently placed in baskets and blankets.

Another beautiful element of this session? His parents’ tattoos. We love when families bring their own style into the studio, and these parents had amazing ink that added such a personal and meaningful touch to their portraits. We took care to highlight their arms holding baby close—those contrast shots of tough tattoos and tiny fingers are always some of our favourites. It’s such a beautiful way to capture strength, love, and new beginnings all in one frame.
