Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming sweet baby Ryan and his parents into my cozy Odessa, Ontario studio, located just minutes from Kingston. From the moment they arrived, it was clear how deeply loved this little boy already was. Their session was filled with meaningful details, beautiful colours, heartfelt family moments, and one very special setup that paid tribute to their Nova Scotian roots.

Creating a Custom Newborn Session Around Family Memories
One of my favourite parts of every baby photography session is designing a gallery that feels personal to each family. Before Ryan's session, we discussed colours, styling preferences, and meaningful elements they wanted incorporated into their images.
His parents were drawn to soft shades of blue, which became the foundation of many of the setups throughout the session.
One set featured a beautiful medium blue backdrop paired with sage wraps and fabrics that complemented Ryan's soft complexion perfectly. The gentle coastal tones created a calm and peaceful feeling throughout the images while keeping the focus entirely on their beautiful baby boy.
One of my favourite setups included Ryan nestled inside a rich navy bowl surrounded by intricate floral details, textured greenery, and deep blue accents. The arrangement created an almost storybook feel, with the flowers and branches appearing to gently cradle him while he slept peacefully in the center. The deep blues added a sense of richness and depth while still feeling soft and baby-focused.

One of the most memorable moments from Ryan's newborn session came with a setup that immediately brought smiles to everyone in the room.
Ryan's family has strong Nova Scotian roots, and they wanted to incorporate a meaningful nod to their heritage into the session.
Enter the lobster outfit.
And honestly? It may have been one of the cutest things I've ever photographed.
The bright red crocheted lobster outfit stood out beautifully against the soft blue backdrop. The vibrant colour immediately drew attention while creating a playful coastal theme that reflected an important part of the family's story.
What made the setup even more special was Ryan's expression.
Unlike many newborns who sleep through every setup, Ryan decided to wake up just enough to give us some personality. His little eyes peeked open as if he was fully aware of the attention he was receiving.
At one point, he looked off to the side with what could only be described as a suspicious expression, causing everyone in the studio to burst out laughing.
It truly felt like he was hamming it up for the camera.
These unexpected moments are often the ones parents treasure most.
While beautifully posed sleeping portraits are timeless, there is something incredibly special about seeing glimpses of a newborn's emerging personality.
The lobster outfit became one of those images that tells a story beyond simply documenting how tiny Ryan was.

Ryan was still wonderfully fresh and sleepy for much of his session, allowing us to capture some beautiful classic newborn portraits.
One setup featured him curled up peacefully on a delicate lace pillow, wrapped in soft sage green fabric. The simplicity of the image allowed every tiny detail to shine.
His tiny fingers rested gently beneath his cheek.
His eyelashes cast delicate shadows across his face.
His perfect little lips formed the slightest pout as he drifted deeper into sleep.
Another favourite setup featured Ryan wrapped in soft blue fabric while resting his head on folded hands. The pose highlighted his beautiful profile and showcased just how small he was during those first precious days.
The studio environment plays a huge role in creating these peaceful moments.

While newborn portraits are beautiful, some of the most emotional images from Ryan's session were the family photographs.
There is something incredibly moving about witnessing parents in those first weeks after welcoming a new baby.
The love is fresh.
The bond is still growing.
Everything feels new.
And yet, somehow, it already feels like that baby has always belonged in their arms.
One of my favourite moments during Ryan's session was watching his parents hold him close during their portraits.
His mother cradled him against her chest, wrapped securely in a rich red swaddle. The tenderness in her expression spoke volumes. You could see the pride, love, and awe she felt every time she looked down at him.
His father held Ryan with equal gentleness, carefully supporting his tiny body while gazing down at him with unmistakable admiration.
These moments weren't overly posed.
They were real.
Natural.
Heartfelt.
We also created a beautiful black-and-white family portrait that instantly became one of my favourites from the session.
The image focused entirely on connection.
Parents leaning together.
Foreheads touching.
Their newborn safely cradled between them.
No distractions.
Just love.
