One of my favourite parts of any baby photography session is designing the overall look. For Josie’s session, her parents shared their love of soft blush tones, creamy neutrals, and a touch of sage green - colours that feel timeless but still playful.
From there, we curated a series of outfits and a pretty spring setup that would not only photograph beautifully but also reflect Josie’s sweet and growing personality.
We started with a delicate, textured outfit in a soft peachy pink. The fabric had just enough detail to catch the light without overwhelming her tiny features. We wanted to pair it with a simple headband, to create that dreamy, soft aesthetic that so many parents love when searching for the best baby photographer in the Kingston area but she wasn’t interested in the headband. Which is totally okay! This is a baby led session after all!
The studio itself is designed to feel warm and inviting, that immediately puts both baby and parents at ease. Every prop and backdrop is intentionally selected, from plush flokati rugs to handpicked baskets and minimalist seating pieces that keep the focus right where it belongs - on your baby.
For Josie’s mini milestone session, we incorporated:
A neutral-toned wooden crate as well as a white bed for a classic seated look
A soft pink flokati rug paired with her peachy pink outfit for a timeless feel
A white brick backdrop with a surprise burst of bold colour in a dark green dress her parents brought from home that tied everything together beautifully

Letting Josie Take the Lead
If there’s one thing I always tell parents, it’s this: the best photos happen when we slow down, have fun and let baby lead the way.
Josie came into the studio wide-eyed and curious, taking in every detail of her surroundings. The soft hum of the studio, the gentle warmth, and the cozy textures all worked together to create a calming environment where she could explore and feel comfortable.
As a Kingston family photographer, creating this kind of space is just as important as the technical side of photography.
We took our time easing into the session - no rush, no pressure, as it can take a few minutes for baby’s to warm up to the new environment (well new to her - she didn’t remember coming in for her newborn portraits!). There were moments where Josie simply sat and observed, her tiny fingers gripping the soft textures beneath her. And then, just like that, her personality began to shine.
She gave us the most adorable silly grins, the kind that light up her entire face and make everyone in the room laugh. Those are the moments I live for.
At one point, she decided it was time to show off her brand new crawling skills - and oh my goodness, she was so proud of herself. She scooted forward with determination, pausing just long enough to flash a cheeky smile at the camera and her parents, as if she knew exactly how cute she was.
We followed her lead, adjusting setups and angles as needed. That’s the beauty of milestone sessions - they’re not rigid or overly posed. They’re fluid, natural, and full of life.
And of course, there were breaks for cuddles, little resets, and quiet moments with mom and dad. These pauses aren’t interruptions - they’re part of allowing Josie and babies just like her to be themselves. We only book one session in a day so there is no pressure to get the portraits done in a strict schedule. Babies only want to hang out for so long, so generally our sessions are 30-45 minutes long at this age, depending on how baby is feeling that day. It’s all very relaxed.

Every session has those standout moments - the ones that instantly become favourites, the ones parents will look back on years from now and feel all over again.
Josie gave us so many of those.
One of my absolute favourite shots was during her seated setup on the floral backdrop. She was sitting confidently, hands resting gently in front of her, when she suddenly burst into the biggest, most joyful, gummy smile. It lit up her entire face.
It’s the kind of image that feels alive.
Another moment that stood out was when she started hamming it up for the camera. And I mean fully leaning into it - tilting her head, flashing mischievous grins, and giving us those expressive little looks that feel like she’s already developing her own sense of humour.
Those are the moments that can’t be forced. They happen when babies feel safe, comfortable, and free to be themselves.
